About Us
Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey is a fun, therapeutic, and competitive ice hockey program for physically disabled children and adults. We aim to develop character, sportsmanship, and physical fitness — while promoting and encouraging both educational and cultural experiences.
The Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey organization was founded in 1998. We have grown over the years and continue to build on our existing foundation by increasing player involvement and expanding the number of teams competing locally, nationally, and internationally. What was once a single-team organization, the Mighty Penguins now have 4 divisions rostering a total of 5 teams — two youth and three adult with over 65 players of all ages. We continue to provide opportunities to our amazing athletes of all abilities. The Mighty Penguins are excited to share home ice with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex!
Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey has 4 Divisions with a total of 5 Teams:
- The Novice Division is for any player (ages 5—70+) that is new to sled hockey or who is looking for more of a therapeutic experience. The Novice Division is comprised of our Youth Gold & Adult Gold teams.
- Our Junior Division — currently our Junior Black team — is designed to be the stepping-stone for players who wish to advance in their sled hockey skills and play competitively at either the Intermediate or Senior Division.
- The Intermediate Division — currently our Adult Black team — functions similarly to the level of Junior Black team players but is primarily comprised of adults 18+ or our older Junior Black players.
- The Senior Division/Team is comprised of players who demonstrate an extremely high level of understanding and ability in the sport of sled hockey. Membership to the Senior Team is very selective and tremendously demanding. Teams in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions compete in various tournaments throughout the United States and Canada.
